On your next visit to the trail, be on the lookout for the Creeper Trail’s most famous trail user, local celebrity and trail ambassador: Lawrence “The Legend” Dye. In 1988, just as larger sections of the trail were opened, Lawrence started recording the miles he rode on his beloved Creeper. At the end of April 2017, The Legend recorded his 192,400th mile on the Virginia Creeper Trail! At an incredible 84 years of age!
Lawrence used to ride about 10,000 miles per year but he notes, since turning 80, he has “slacked off” to an annual 7,500 miles or so. So, when you run across Lawrence on the trail, be sure to say hello…and, if you’re really lucky, perhaps he’ll slow down for a moment to share a trail story or take a photo with you.
